work 18 - tūrangawaewae

Tūrangawaewae is one of the most well-known and powerful Māori concepts. Literally tūranga (standing place), waewae (feet), it is often translated as 'a place to stand'. Tūrangawaewae are places where we feel especially empowered and connected. They are our foundation, our place in the world, our home.

So I've painted this in oils on stretched canvas, questioning where one's feet may be, where one is standing, one's view of the world, of people in the world, of this world we live in.. this road we're travelling ;-) Have you figured it out? Maybe the important thing is to keep on figuring ;-)

There is a gallery up North in the hills, 20 minutes north of Whangarei - Gallery Helena Bay - worth a visit, as they have a great restaurant next door, the seafood chowder is yum.. Do pay them a visit for a great art experience and wonderful food :-)

see next time
